ENGAGE has written to the Press Complaints Commission concerning the mention of Lord Ahmed of Rotherham's religion in news stories referring to the possibility of his facing trial for dangerous driving.

Article 12, section 2 of the PCC code of practice requires that ‘details of an individual’s race, colour, religion, sexual orientation, physical or mental illness or disability must be avoided unless genuinely relevant to the story.’

The ENGAGE letter can be read in full here.

I'd be interested to know what sort of response you get from the PCC. I've previously contacted them on such matters (mentioning of people's faiths when the story has nothing to do with race or religion) and received responses stating that the PCC can only process complaints from the actual people mentioned in the article unless I can demonstrate why the contents affect me. I mentioned the faith issue and that I shared the same faith. However, the PCC said it was unable to process my complaint, suggesting the reason wasn't good enough. Good luck and keep us posted.

i think it is important to recognise that the pcc and ofcom are merely organisations that act as a firewall between you and the media.

they are meant to make you feel that something is being done and that you have a voice.

the reality is that they are there to protect media interests not you.

as an aside id be interested to know how many positive outcomes on behalf of muslims/islam issues have resulted through complaints from the public.

if the watchdogs cant be impartial why then should the media?
