‘Learn the Koran - Muslims bid to teach your kids’

The Daily Star prints its usual nonsense with this story on a bid submitted by a Muslim charity to set up a primary school in Swindon.

The Al Habib Islamic Education and Cultural Centre has applied to establish a primary school in the area with 50% of places at the school, which serves a mainly non-Muslim area, reserved for local pupils.

The Star’s opening paragraph to the story states: ‘Non-Muslim children will be taught Arabic and study the Koran under plans for a new faith school.’

It corrects this in a later paragraph quoting a charity spokesman as saying: ‘Non-Muslims can sit out the lessons but it is hoped most will choose to stay in class to gain more insight into Islam.’

And to assure that readers are suitably offended, the Daily Star complements the story with a picture of a Muslim woman in a face veil, alluding to the tribunal cases involving Muslim teaching assistants who wore face veils. As if the headline wasn’t misleading enough.
