Letter to the Daily Mail

ENGAGE has written to the Daily Mail concerning the comment piece by Melanie Phillips in today's edition (22 Dec), 'We must not let the weakness of our bishops destroy this nation’s soul'.

Phillips writes that 'the undermining of Christianity from within is being exploited by militant Islamist fanatics who want to turn Britain into an Islamic state.'

'This might seem an impossible notion, until you recall the way Dr Williams — followed by the senior judge Lord Phillips — said there was nothing to be feared from the encroachment within Britain of Islamic sharia law, regardless of the fact that such law is based on principles which are inimical to Christianity and liberal democracy.'

And further that, 'It is no surprise that the call for disestablishment is not coming from non-Christian faiths. I am a Jew; yet I believe that without Protestantism holding the ring, British culture will descend into a fight for supremacy between faith groups in which the strongest and most violent will win.'

ENGAGE in a letter to the editor of the Daily Mail notes: 'It is of course no surprise that Ms Phillips should engage in scaremongering and tell her readers that Islam would gain most from disestablishment of the Anglican Church. Such an argument is perfectly in keeping with her rarely concealed prejudice against Islam. It is however fundamentally flawed. Muslims have never supported calls for disestablishment and have always maintained that the Church of England plays an important role in keeping faith in the public sphere. It is a role which has over the years been considerably supported by Muslims through various interfaith initiatives.'

'Perhaps Ms Phillips might heed her own conviction and avail herself of the wisdom on the Archbishop of Canterbury who in an interview last week said, ‘It’s a worrying thing [the furore over his comments on Shari’a law in Britain] because it depends on keeping crisis at the forefront of everybody’s mind. …it blocks out the ordinary, prosaic continuities [between faith communities].’’

'No doubt such common sense remarks would ill suit Ms Phillips’ penchant for the dramatic.'

ENGAGE would urge others to contact the letters editor of the Daily Mail, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , and raise the issue of Phillips' falsification of Muslim attitudes towards disestablishment.

That is a good response from Engage to the barking behaviour of Melanie Phillips.

It is so clear that all she is interested in is inciting hatred of Muslims. Oh, and she's ugly.

In my opinion Melanie Phillips is absolutely right to write this letter .
The Muslim Faith as practiced by these fanatics is an awful Religion .
When will you Muslims condemn?
Why must you Bomb . Hate and find integration into this Country so difficult under your Islamic way of life .
I detest you people . Why on Earth are you here ? Why not settle into Iran if that is the style of life that you want .
