Theresa May bans Zakir Naik from entering UK

The government has banned Dr Zakir Naik, an Indian Muslim preacher, from entering the UK where has was due to arrive today to begin a lecture tour that would see him appear at the Sheffield Arena, London's Wembley Arena and Birmingham's LG Arena in the NEC.

From the Telegraph:

'The Home Secretary can exclude or deport an individual if she thinks that their presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good.

'There had been speculation that Dr Naik would be allowed into the UK. However Mrs May said she was excluding him because of the “numerous comments” he made were evidence of his “unacceptable behaviour”.

'This behaviour applies to anyone who writes or publishes material which can “foment justify or glorify terrorist violence” or “seek to provoke others to terrorist acts”.

'Mrs May told The Daily Telegraph: “I have excluded Dr Naik from the UK. Numerous comments made by Dr Naik are evidence to me of his unacceptable behaviour.

'“Coming to the UK is a privilege not a right and I am not wiling to allow those who might not be conducive to the public good to enter the UK.

'“Exclusion powers are very serious and no decision is taken lightly or as a method of stopping open debate on issues.”

'Home Office sources said Dr Naik had been filmed on a website making inflammatory comments such as “every Muslim should be a terrorist”.

'He said: “When a robber sees a policeman he’s terrified. So for a robber, a policeman is a terrorist. So in this context, every Muslim should be a terrorist to the robber.”'

Dr Zakir Naik, considered among the top 100 most powerful men in India and the latest individual who has been excluded by the UK government from entering Britain, is yet another example of the creeping assault on freedom of expression and the effectiveness of malevolent campaigning run by lobbyists and sections of the media.

At the end of last month, numerous newspapers ran sensationalist headlines:

The Times: 'Muslim preacher of hate is let into Britain'

The Daily Mail: 'Allowed into UK, the preacher who backs Bin Laden'

The Daily Express: 'Terror backer' can enter UK...despite Tories' ban pledge

The Daily Star: 'Islamic extremist Zakir Naik to start tour preaching hate'

For his part, Zakir Naik has issued a press release in which he emphasises that his comments about Bin Laden were made in 1996, and that he 'unequivocally condemns acts of violence including 9/11, 7/7 and 7/11 (Serial train bombing in Mumbai) which are completely and absolutely unjustifiable on any basis.'

Readers will recall that when an arrest warrant was issued for Tzipi Livni, the Jewish Leadership Council reportedly ‘warned the government that an inability to invite Israeli leaders to Britain was probably discriminatory against the Jewish community.’ Does it not follow that it is discriminatory against the Muslim community to ban Zakir Naik?

The issue of excluding speakers also raises the question of how arbitrarily we assess the good versus bad statements made by speakers. If we are to extend the same gesture to others who allegedly incite violence and are not conducive to the public good, then surely, the government should also be scrutinising whether Benny Morris (who described the Arab world as ‘barbarian’ and Palestinians as wild animals who had to be locked up in ‘a cage’), Avigdor Lieberman (who called for the execution of Arab Israeli Knesset members who were in contact with Hamas or marked the Nakba) and Geert Wilders, best known for his strident attacks on Islam, should gain entry into the UK.

Arguably, though we may not agree with speakers’ views, they should be able to visit the UK. If they are then thought to have broken any of our laws then a prosecution should be brought forth.

You can write to your local MP to press the home secretary, Theresa May, on why the government has selectively enforced its denial of entry into the UK:

israeli lobby at it again  - the best action to take   |2010-06-18 14:47:41
as you noted zakir naik is concerned to be in the top 100 most powerful men in india with millions of followers

the campaign should be directed towards the 2-300 million indian muslims to aggressively promote a boycot of israel and the Uk. The UK for following the whims and desires of the zionist lobby and the zionist lobby , because it is the main driver of these exclusions.

let there be no doubt to the uk and israel that there will be a cost to offending 300 million indian muslims.

you can help by contacting muslim indian organisations (simple google search) and highlighting the connection to zakir naiks ban and the israeli lobby in the uk

Those comments were taken out of context - typical from British propaganda, Churchill manipulated the media in WW2 and it happening all again.. government dictate the agenda, media choose and pick what they want, so number 10 can "control through fear". Why do the continue to deny us the full facts.

It is shocking to learn that a politician of such a high rank could so easily lie and that too lie openly in front of huge masses. I would like to send my deep condolences not to Dr. Naik but to Theresa May, for out of ignorance she had taken such a step that would soon ruin her political career. Does she think the world to be dumb, deaf & blind? Truth stands clear from err. Theresa you have badly earned wrath from around the globe & I hope that you amend your statement as quickly as possible. That would be better, only if you knew!

I am really very amazed with the exclusion order for Dr. Zakir Naik one of the best Muslim scholar and international orator on Islam as well as on other religions by the UK Government, here i challenged to every single scholar of any other religion specially those who belongs to Christianity and Jewess to come forward and face him you will definetly fall from the height of your own made to the mare.

This exclusion and ban was not from the UK Government but its a pressure to them from the Jews, UK is being run by them.

Sorry to say Heresa May a English women and English her mother tongue but still unable to understand the term i.e."every Muslim should be a terrorist to the robber" its a very simple statement every one can understand it quite easily, its means that every Muslim should behave like a police man against the anti social elements for the society what a police man does he always try to keep the city or his area safe infact it is the part of his duty and also beware for anything that can harm the law and order situation in the territory its mean that every police man is a tarriest understand by Mrs MAY how weak your English is , you need to improve your English how you have been a part of the cabinet.

I myself listen Dr. Zakir's speech i did not find any thing wrong with the speech, she has taken out of the context and she do not have any strong evidenceagainst him. she failed to understand the great message given by him.

Shame on UK Government and on Herasa May

Having read through many articles on this website i have to say that it is utterly ridiculous.

In this article you condemn Theresa May's decision as an "assualt on the freedom of expression" yet in many articles on this site you condemn the media for publishing any article which may remotely be constrewed to offend the Muslim community. Seems to be a bit hypocritical to me.

To clarify i'm not commenting on Zakir Naik's exclusion from UK entry but generally criticising the hypocracy present on this site.
Zakib  - Missing the point   |2011-02-20 00:34:21
As a muslim I must say it is sad to see how many muslims have completely missed the point. I think, if anything, we are taking May's reson for banning out of context.

Of course Naik isn't actually suggesting all muslims should be terrorists. And if you know this simple fact, don't you think the government does too?

The issue is, why was he giving this talk at all? Why did the issue need clarifying? All he did was try to normalise "terrorism" (perhaps just as a term) at a time when so many people have suffered due to terrorism. This goes completely against all of the hard efforts of the UK government to keep our country safe.

Also, if you do a bit of simple research, you will find that this individual speech of Naik's wasn't the only one which was an issue.
