The Daily Express is at it again

The Daily Express' front page headline today read 'Muslims force pool cover-up' alleging that a swimming pool at Darlaston Leisure Centre in Walsall reportedly covered ground-level windows with opaque film following complaints 'received from Muslim groups.'

From the Express:

'The centre won plaudits from architects for its “ultra-modern” design when it opened to the public 10 years ago.

'But now council staff have covered ground-level windows with opaque film at a cost of £1,400 following complaints, mainly from Muslims concerned that they might be spotted in their swimwear.

'Regular users of the pool are furious that the tinted windows, installed a fortnight ago, have plunged the pool into gloom – and all in the name of political correctness.'

'Leisure chief Councillor Anthony Harris said: “I’m pleased we’ve been able to make these modifications because not only does it show we’re listening to the views and concerns of our users but also because it enhances the privacy of swimmers.

'“An opaque sticker was put around the pool at a level conducive to a sensitive level of modesty. It has been raised by the Muslim community, but it was an all-embracing decision to cover the windows."'

Only much later does the article note:

'A spokeswoman for Walsall Council said the complaints had come mostly from the Muslim community but non-Muslim women had also objected.'

Separately, a poll in the paper asks 'Should Muslims get special treatment?’

The question of whether Muslims get ‘special treatment’ ironically comes on the back of news of an imminent announcement by the government into allegations that British security services were complicit in the torture of suspects abroad.

The Daily Mail ran the same story with the headline 'Swimmers plunged into dark after council covers swimming pool windows 'to protect Muslim women's modesty'' allowing readers to submit their comments on the Daily Mail’s website. The piece, which generated hundreds of responses, demonstrates how the media knowingly foment anti-Muslim prejudice.

The following comments, left on the Daily Mail's website, are case in point:

'Sorry, this is a Christian country, not Muslim. This should not be catered for.' - Lusherly, UK, 5/7/2010 14:00

'I'm getting seriously hacked off with the treatment afforded to muslims.' - PeteW, Harrow UK, 5/7/2010 21:44

'Why is it that Muslims ALWAYS want their own way and equally why is it that the rest of the UK population ALWAYS give it to them?'
- Johnny Johnson, Middle of nowhere, South Africa, 5/7/2010 20:53

'Get used to it, ladies. We'll all be forced to wear the bhurka before long so that we don't offend Muslims. Sharia law will insist on it, with public beatings and/or imprisonment if we don't.' - Poppy, UK, 6/7/2010 12:52

'Of course the council had a choice. In truth, they simply pandered to the Muslim community, which is fundamentally wrong. It is this multicultural attitude that is gradually sending this country to the dogs. Multiculturalism, the failed social engineering project, is dead, and the British demand their country back!' - Desmond, North Devon UK, 5/7/2010 13:58

According to your reproduction of the Express report:

'But now council staff have covered ground-level windows with opaque film at a cost of £1,400 following complaints, mainly from Muslims concerned that they might be spotted in their swimwear.

That others complained is made clear. The fact is most complainers were Muslims. What proportion of the population are they?

What on earth has this to do with British security services? And you're complaining about unjustified connections!
