PVE ‘gravy train’

Birmingham City Councillor Salma Yaqoob said during an interview on Radio 4’s Today programme that money being distributed by local councils as part of the Government's Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) scheme was "being used as a gravy train for those willing to toe the Government line, regardless of effectiveness on the ground."

Cllr Yaqoob has already challenged Birmingham City Council’s use of funds arguing that money was being allocated to groups and individuals without due consultation with local councillors or sufficient regard for measurable results.

Given that it is Muslims that suffer when bad publicity is generated around the public funds under the PVE agenda and their ill use, Cllr Yaqoob ought to be commended for reminding local authorities and the groups that have applied for funds under the PVE scheme, that effectiveness on the ground should and must remain the barometer against which any funding decisions are taken.
