LATEST NEWS:

Ahmadis accuse MCB of 'not condemning terrorism' and 'supporting anti-semitism'

BBC Radio 5 Live’s “Your Call” programme with Nicky Campbell this morning asked “Is Islam getting a raw deal in the UK?”

Questions raised included:

  • Who’s responsible for the bad image of Islam?
  • Are Muslims cosseted in our society and given an easy ride in public debates?
  • Is Islam too pervasive in our public discourse?
  • Who perpetuates the negative perceptions of Islam?

While the efforts of the Ahmadiyyah community for the advertising campaign on buses and billboards, not dissimilar to the Exploring Islam Foundation’s advertising campaign some months ago, will perhaps make people think twice about their negative perceptions of Islam, the initiative is unlikely to get very far in pushing its message if it perpetuates prejudices and advances misrepresentations of its own.

Towards the end of the radio programme studio guest Ahsan Ahmedi, who is involved in the campaign, speaks of Muslim reactions to 7/7 and falsely accuses the Muslim Council of Britain of “not condemning terrorism” and of “supporting anti-Semitism” by not attending Holocaust Memorial Day ceremonies.

The former allegation will come as a shock to the MCB which issued a press release strongly condemning the terrorist attacks of July 7th and invited prominent scholars from across the UK to put their names to a public statement denouncing all acts of terrorism.

And as any who has read the public statements issued by the MCB on its reasons for not attending HMD, none would dare to suggest that their intention amounted to “supporting anti-semitism”.

The MCB should consider suing the BBC for allowing such comments on air. It is not the first time it has happened on the BBC. In July 2009 the BBC was forced to issue a public apology to the MCB and pay £45,000 in damages for broadcasting libelous remarks by Charles Moore of the Spectator and Daily Telegraph during an edition of BBC Question Time.

Listen to the programme on BBC iPlayer here (only available for the next seven days).

I was listening to the programme, whilst driving in to work. This Ahmedi guy was such an apologist, if ever there was one... "We were and are so, so sorry for this , that and the other!......kept on publicising, "we the Ahmedi's are very peaceful, etc"...toe curling and absolutely cringing cliched comments.

@ MOHAMMAD - THE MULLAH now holds the Pakistani society by the throat. His version of Islam has plunged Pakistan into an epidemic of honor killings, hate murders and mob executions of fellow Muslims and minorities alike. The society is paying the price for allowing the Mullah to propagate extremism and intolerance from the pulpit. WE WILL NOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN IN THE UK -

First of all, the BBC is not responsible for individuals who express their opinions. Secondly, I think a huge problem is the fact that neither Ahmadis want to associate themselves with the other Muslims and vice versa. Mr Nasir, you said that "we will not allow this to happen in the UK", well, InshAllah. But the problem will be tackled more easily with God's prayers and if all of the Muslims in the UK including Ahmadis got behind this problem to tackle it.

Let's be honest, it is wrong to attribute something to someone if they have not done it. As for being apologetic, who would not be sorry for the loss of life. Yes British forces are murdering our dear Muslims around the world, but that does not mean to say that some nutters killing commuters on the London underground isn't upsetting and unfortunate.
