The party leader, Nick Griffin, seeking European partners for the BNP, echoes his support for the views of a candidate from Vlaams Belang, the far right Belgian party, who said, "We urgently need global chemotherapy against Islam to save civilisation." Griffin, questioned by the Channel 4 news presenter Cathy Newman, elaborates on this position saying: Prosecutors have already noted the difficulties posed by current incitement to racial hatred legislation in securing prosecutions for the BNP's anti-Muslim literature. The comments by Griffin to Channel 4 News will raise again the question of whether sufficient legal mechanisms exist to curtail literature and comments by the BNP which constitute incitement to religious hatred. Had Griffin made the very same remarks about Judaism he would almost certainly face prosecution as Jews are treated for the purpose of law as a racial group, while Muslims are not.
