Muslim gravestones in Manchester cemetery desecrated again

Muslim gravestones in a Manchester cemetery have been desecrated for the third time.

Over 20 headstones at the Southern Cemetery in Manchester were pushed over sometime between Friday 20th and Monday 23rd November.

It is the third time that the Muslim section of the cemetery has been targeted by vandals. On 29 September 2009, 26 Muslim headstones were vandalised and on 2 November 2009, 27 were similarly targeted. The police are treating the incident as a racially motivated hate crime.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Eckersley said:

"The repeated nature of these attacks and the fact the offenders are only targeting Muslim graves means we are treating this as a hate crime.

"We have increased our patrols in the cemetery and surrounding area and I ask people using the cemetery to be vigilant and report anyone causing damage to the graves or acting suspiciously.

"To those who know who is responsible or have been told who is responsible I would like to ask how you would feel if someone damaged a grave of one of your loved ones and how hurt or upset that would make you.

"Please do the right thing, tell us what you know and help us put a stop to this."

In the days before the English Defence League’s demonstration in Manchester on 10th October a video on ‘Defending our Christian heritage and birthright’ was produced and posted on an EDL sympathiser’s blog.

The video suggests that gravestones at St. John’s Church in Longsight, Manchester had been overturned to make way for a mosque on the church’s hallowed grounds. It also claims that Christian gravestones were desecrated in late September 2009.

Is there a link we wonder?

The Police identifying this and similar crimes as "racially-motivated" allows the Muslim bashers to continue to portray Islam as a 'foreign' religion and appeal to the 'White Christian patriot' fringes of society. These acts were clearly aimed at the Muslim graveyards on the grounds of people's religion, so they should be classified as religiously-motivated sectarian attacks. It's time we as an ummah stood up and said we're British and we're here to stay.
